I would like to join AMSA. Where can I pay my dues and how much is it? Is there a membership form to fill out?

• The new 2017-18 membership form is under the tab membership & members under summer promotions (please follow the directions there)
• If you have a PayPal account, local dues for one semester (either fall or spring) is $40 and for both the fall and spring semesters (annual) is $55 (please click here). If you don’t have a PayPal account and/or you want to pay your dues in person, we accept cash, credit, check or money order. Once accepted and confirmed, you can then pay your dues and turn in your paper completed membership form at any of the general meetings or during our office hours.
• If you become a national member, paying $75 online, you qualify for our local promotion and would only have to pay a $25 local fee that first year in which you get a bonus free T-shirt. Subsequent years’ local fees would be only $ 35 per year (unless changed by next year’s officers). The reason we recommend students to become national members is because membership lasts for 4 years  and you get free MCAT flashcards, an e-medical dictionary, a magazine subscription and e-news all which prepare and keep you abreast for your medical career.

I’m interested in running for office at the end of the school year. What are the requirements to run?

• In order to run for office, you must be a national member and also be classified as an active member.
• Please note officers of AMSA put in as much time as a part-time job and most positions start as soon as the election results are known in May.
• Please see the 2017-18 Constitution for further details.

If I get an opportunity for shadowing through AMSA what does that entail?

• Our VP works throughout the year contacting multitudes of physicians to find those who are able and kind enough to oblige a shadowing position for a non-medical student which is hard to accommodate since HIPPA rules, hospital requirements, and liability are all involved.
• Once our VP has secured a list of physicians willing to accommodate one of our top members for a short period of time, the contact information is relayed to the top member. It is then the top member’s responsibility to immediately contact and introduce them self to the physician’s office to set up the shadowing time.
• Many Physicians go on short holidays during the summer right before they get their new residents in the summer, which becomes a little challenging dealing with new physicians acclimating to a full-time clinical setting.  Due to unforeseen issues or circumstances, they might not have time to accommodate someone outside of new physicians and rotational med-students. That is why it is important to immediately make contact with the physician’s office and be flexible in your expectations.
• Be prepared to dress professionally in a clean pressed suit or conservative dress with hosiery and closed toe and heel shoes in very good condition. Make sure your hands, hair, and face are groomed appropriately for a professional sanitary setting. Make sure you eat a good breakfast and take a protein bar in your pocket or purse, because you might not get a lunch break. Most physicians, residents, and rotational med-students work all the way through the day without a lunch break because of the amount of patients they have to see.  Be prepared to stand all day and walk.  Be prepared to step out of the room if asked, some patients want their privacy, which is understandable. Be prepared with money for lunch and parking for the day ( if in the medical center).
• Make sure you follow up your shadowing with a real thank you letter.

Who is the pre-med advisor for UH?

• Dr. Williams who is also over JAMP.
•  If you are undeclared, but know you want to be pre-med, the auxiliary counselors  (housed near Cougar 1 & 2 Village) may be able to help you along with Dr. Williams.  According to the front desk workers, the previous auxiliary pre-med counselor Ms. Pricer is unfortunately no longer working for UH since mid May 2017.
